Introduction

"The IPA Bellwether Report provides a valuable snapshot of the UK advertising and marketing services market"
Sir Martin Sorrell, Chief Executive, WPP

Bellwether, produced by NTC Economics, is the most comprehensive survey of its kind that gives a unique insight into the marketing budget plans for Corporate UK and how they are changing over time. It is widely respected and used by media analysts and key strategic executives at top media firms to better understand marketing and advertising spend and trends in the UK.

The strength of the data is evident when you consider its loyal client base and the endorsement it receives from key spokespeople at the industries’ top advisory firms. Media analysts from investment banks including Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley and UBS use it as part of their detailed economic analysis of the sector, as well as senior strategic executives at firms including BSkyB, Clear Channel and ITV for forecasting and planning activity.

Highlights of the Q4 2007 report.
Marketing budgets were revised down for the first time in a year during Q4 2007, indicating the steepest decline since Q1 2006.

Main media advertising saw the largest cut to budgets in Q4, despite including the fast growing internet sub-category.

Advertising budgets for traditional media such as press and TV were hit particularly hard in Q4, but still account for an estimated 29% of total marketing spend.

Budget cuts were most widely reported in the FMCG, financial services, auto and industrial sectors.
