The 'Flash' Purchasing Managers’ Indexes (PMIs) for Germany and France. Published approximately one week before the final PMI data are released each month, these advance estimates will be the earliest available indicators of economic and business conditions in each country. The first data will be published on 20 March 2008.

The German and French national flash PMIs will be published on the same day as the flash RBS/NTC Eurozone PMIs, providing the first data on trends in euro area business conditions each month.

These flash PMIs will provide data for both manufacturing and services industries, as well as new data on both sectors combined. The flash data will typically be based on at least 75% of the monthly survey responses used in the calculation of final data each month.

Final data will continue to be published on the first working day of each month for manufacturing and the third working day for services. New composite data series (combining manufacturing and services data to provide an overall indication of private sector business conditions) will also be published on the third working day.

An accurate advance indicator of final PMI data

Back testing to the flash estimates shows that the early estimates provide an accurate advance indication of the final PMI data.

The average differences between the flash and final PMI index values (final minus flash) since comparisons were first available in January 2006 are as follows (differences in absolute terms provide the better indication of true variation while average differences provide a better indication of any bias):

Index Average difference Average difference in absolute terms
German Composite Output Index -0.1 0.6
 German Manufacturing PMI 0.2 0.5
German Services Activity Index -0.3 1.0

French Composite Output Index -0.3 0.5
 French Manufacturing PMI 0.0 0.5
French Services Activity Index -0.5 0.8

Flash PMI releases are planned for other countries in 2008, for which further details are to be announced in coming months.
